Introduction

In this discussion course, we will examine the origins of life from a Biochemical perspective. Through this examination, we will investigate several topics: We will be watching and discussing several lectures by Professor Nick Lane of University College London, as well as an article on Bioenergetic Constraints on the Evolution of Complex Life. We will examine Watson & Crick's famous work on DNA structure, Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids, and how that informed our search for the origins of life. We will study the structure and characteristics of DNA, RNA, and proteins, and use this knowledge to examine the RNA world hypothesis. Each day, there will be an instructor led presentation, followed by classroom discussion on your assignments. You will be graded on participation in these discussions, which will require you to have read the material. I hope you enjoy our look into the Origins of Life.
